Housing boom in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

The crazy housing boom in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

The recent housing boom in Saskatoon is sending people scrambling to find new places to rent as the greedy landlords kick them out.

If the landlord wants to raise the rent he has to give the tenant notice and can only raise it a small amount. By getting them to move out he can raise the rent as much as he wants.

We were renting from an agency for 8 years, then the place was sold to a person who we thought at first was a decent person. The duplex was in dire need of repair when he bought it. He and I had a verbal agreement that he would buy the material and that I would do the renovations free of labour just so we had a better place to live in.In a year and a half he bought flooring for three bedrooms and  two of the bathrooms.Them we waited and waited and walked on subflooring for over a year. He and I both agreed to rip out the carpet as it was in pretty bad shape (couldn't be cleaned).I told him that I would rather walk on subflooring than on that carpet.I never realized that we would have to wait that long.

He got my girlfriend to use only her income to fill out an application for him to apply for funding to replace the furnace and hotwater heater with energy efficient ones. This funding was only available to landlords who rented to LOW INCOME FAMILIES.He told her not to put my income on the application as he would not get the funding,as it would show that we were not low income.

Then when the boom came about he gave us thirty days to get out.We fought him with the rentalsman as thirty days is not realy enough time to find a place. Even if we were to buy a place we would never have had a possesion date within the thirty days.

 More to come
